Let's Eat!

Updated: Apr 10

Caye Caulker has some hidden gems when it comes to cuisine. Some are (relatively) more expensive, most are not. Here are some of our favorites...

Breakfast - either Suggestion Gourmet or Weezies Cafe & Patio Bar. Everyone raves about Errolyn's house of Fry Jacks, and they are certainly worth a try. Fried stuffed dough with eggs & beans tends to make me want to go back to bed and start the day over though. So we are recommending a couple of places that will get your day started the right way.

Suggestion Gourmet is owned by a true Frenchman, so the croissants are fantastic. The vibe here is laid-back. You almost feel like you are having breakfast at your friend's house. They are pretty much our neighbors as well, so the walk there is a breeze.

The Weezies Cafe & Patio bar is right around the corner though, and worth the extra steps. Located directly inside of the Weezies Hotel, this cafe offers a great coffee menu and a more traditional (think eggs cooked how you like them) food selection.

Both of these places are also open for dinner as well. No matter what time of day, you won't be let down at either of these.

Lunch - Lotus by Habenero at Blu Zen. This is a trip to the north island worth taking. The food is excellent and the setting is serene. The beach at the resort is open for non-Blu Zen-guests as well. Stick around long enough and enjoy cheaper eats when happy hour starts at 3.

If you are sticking around the south island we can recommend any one of the street-food vendors adjacent to the children's park. They all pretty much have the same menu - grilled shrimp/lobster/conch/fish with rice & beans and coleslaw. Take your food to go or eat it right on the beach with a cold Belikin and lively conversation with the locals.

Loaded baked potato bombs if you need help taking a nap.

Dinner - Las Palapas or Swings.

Las Palapas is our new personal favorite. This restaurant is a little more pricey than its competitors, but once you try the food you'll forget all about that. There is something to be said about offering cloth napkins as well.

Swings is more of a party atmosphere, but they do excellent grill-work. We usually go whole grilled lobster & 2 sides for $35 BZD. The service is excellent and the pours are heavy.

Reef & Beef from Las Palapas tastes as good as it looks.

Runner's up consist of Il Pelicano (great ambiance but the service is... let's just say inconsistent) for dinner and Ice N Beans for breakfast (usually crowded but awesome food and coffee).

Safe travels and go slow!
